The celebration of the centenary of the “Splendid Palace” cinema brought together classics of Latvian cinema, actors and those for whom cinema plays an important role in their lives. For many, the house where movies have been shown for 100 years is associated with childhood memories, experienced moments of celebration and joy.
“I first came to this cinema in 1946, we lived next door. In the house where the president lives now, there was a communal apartment. Those who came from the countryside lived there. And these boys came in the summer and watched movies through small doors. They were a little celebration!” movie director Ivars Seleckis shared his memories. “Now, I look, 67 years have passed, but the wonderful feeling that came over us when we entered the cinema then is still there now.”
“These were the most beautiful moments in our lives. Our premieres took place here.
And since we, the editing girls, have been sitting next to the director and in the end we end up on this stage, so that the most beautiful moments in life can be,” said cinema editing director Maija Selecka.
Film director Varis Brasla emphasized: “Here, there have always been very nice people at the helm in the cinema, who have also evaluated those who make the cinema.
There was such a half-house here and we were always received very warmly and pleasantly, whether the film was better or worse.”
“A different model of behavior is required here at all times. And I would like to keep it. Without popcorn, but with devotion to the moment on the screen,” noted actress Vizma Kalve.
Cinematographer Miks Zvirbulis admitted: “Until now, it is impossible for me to watch a serious film work in any other way than in a cinema.
I like to sit close enough that I can turn my head so I can see the details. And here, besides, there is a special atmosphere.”
“Kultūrdevas” ABC: cinema “Splendid Palace”
The central event of the evening of the centenary celebration is the movie “Sherlock Junior” shot by the silent cinema classic Buster Keaton in 1924. Similar to 100 years ago, when the silent films were accompanied by a tapir game in the hall, this time too music by Kārlis Lācs, composed especially for this event, sounded. As the owners of the cinema admit, they try to do everything possible to make people want to come and watch the cinema, to return to the cinema.
Daira Āboliņa, artistic director of the cinema, shared her thoughts:
“What is the strength of cinema “Splendid Palace” – it’s the atmosphere, it’s the environment, it’s quality films and it’s the opportunity to meet. The opportunity to meet – it’s luxury!”
In my opinion, we are a rational and functional team, and I wish this to the younger colleagues – love this cinema as much as I do!”
The celebration of the centenary of the “Splendid Palace” cinema will be broadcast on Latvian Television on the evening of December 29.
