Hyundai has introduced a new tire that integrates a set of anti-skid chains. The system is activated at the push of a button and puts an end to the unpleasant experience of standing in the cold to put on / take off the classic anti-skid chains.
Each tire will have six grooves, associated with the six spokes of the rim. In these grooves is a system similar to anti-skid chains, which can be retracted when not needed.
Hyundai used compressed alloys with memory, which can be activated and expanded when they receive an electrical signal. Thus, when the road is icy, snowy, with poles or the Highway Code applied in that area requires the existence of snow chains, the driver presses a button and activates the system. Drivers get rid of the times when they had to get out of the car in the cold, get wet feet or freeze their hands on the anti-skid chains.
Hyundai has big plans with the new technology
For now, Hyundai is only talking about a concept. “This innovation, which we hope to integrate into Hyundai and Kia vehicles soon, demonstrates the commitment to turn advanced technologies into real solutions for customers to benefit from,” said Joon Mo Park, head of the Advanced Chassis Development Department.
For those who frequently drive in snowy areas, this technology could be a lifesaver, he writes newatlas.com. Hyundai says it has patented the technology in South Korea and the US and the Hyundai/Kia group wants to mass-produce these tires after technological development and durability and performance testing.
