Olympic champion in figure skating Roman Kostomarov, who had both legs amputated below the knee, as well as both hands, returned to skating.

The athlete posted a video on Instagram showing him driving around the skating rink.

“As promised… I WENT ON THE ICE!!! I’m sharing with you a short excerpt from the training,” Kostomarov wrote.

The athlete also said that the story of his return to the ice after a serious illness will become the basis of a “big movie.”

“Everything is carefully documented by the film crew, which accompanies Oksana and me every day [Домниной — женой Романа Костомарова и также фигуристкой, прим. „Медуза“]“,” he wrote, adding that the premiere of the “big movie” is scheduled for March 8.

In January 2023, Roman Kostomarov became seriously ill with pneumonia, after which he developed sepsis; doctors had to amputate the athlete’s both legs below the knee, as well as both hands. In the summer, Kostomarov began posting photos and videos from recovery training, and in the fall he said that he was going to get back on skates and go on the ice. “Of course, I won’t skate like before, there [необходимы] a very subtle feeling, the work of muscles that I have lost, but I will definitely skate,” Kostomarov said in early November.
