Stuttgart (dpa). Coach Sebastian Hoeneß was also satisfied with VfB Stuttgart’s performance and draw against Bayer Leverkusen due to the DFB Cup round of 16 win against Borussia Dortmund.
In the strong first half, Stuttgart took a 1-0 lead thanks to Chris Führich’s goal (40th). In the second half, the Bundesliga leaders got into the game better and, thanks to national player Florian Wirtz, quickly made the final score 1-1 (47th).
“The goal we conceded in particular hurt us. Not only because it equalized the result, but because we also had an intense game during the week. “We really felt it,” said Hoeneß in his conclusion: “Then we had to suffer. We then did that together. That’s why I was very proud of the first half, but I’m also very, very proud of the second half. There is a great danger that Leverkusen will then really come into their own and take the game completely to their side.” The VfB coach said the result was fair.
In the first half, his team “might have failed to create a result other than 1-0. “We really did a lot of things right,” praised Hoeneß. His team also had a “bit of luck” in the second half.
On Wednesday evening, Stuttgart moved into the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup with a 2-0 win against Champions League participants Borussia Dortmund. Leverkusen won 3-1 against SC Paderborn.
