Sweden is once again world champion after blue and yellow defeated Finland in the World Cup final in 2023. The gold was the women’s national team’s ninth straight, eleventh overall in history.
Sweden came out strong in the first period of the WC final against Finland. Already after 31 seconds, Maja Viström broke the deadlock. A blue-yellow onslaught followed and after a period it was 6-0 on the scoreboard.
After the final signal, Maja Viström had a hard time summarizing the first period.
– I think there are many who wonder what happened. Ice unloading, it feels like we’ve been very ineffective in the last few games. It was nice that we got to push a lot of balls there in the first, says Maja Viström.
– Absolutely crazy that it was 6-0 after the first period. I probably can’t really let it go, it was a dream start like no other.
Confederation captain Åsa Karlsson also paid tribute to the first period of the WC final.
– This was probably the best period we have ever done in these vulnerable situations. 6-0 against Finland, absolutely incredible. A fantastic first period, says Åsa Karlsson.
When the final whistle sounded, it announced that Sweden had won its ninth straight World Cup gold, eleventh in total, with the numbers 6-4. A strong performance, says Maja Viström.
– It feels completely surreal that we are on the other side of the world and that we have won the WC gold once again. It is so incredibly beautiful and even more beautiful that we do it with this team, says Maja Viström.
