The managing director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society, Elvira Welzig, says: “We have to tell science differently. More than that, we have to be involved.”
After all, 73 percent of the Austrian population trusts science, which is slightly more than in the previous year. 77 percent are convinced that science improves lives. Nevertheless, in the latest “Science Barometer Austria” from the Academy of Sciences, almost 40 percent said they would rather rely on “common sense” than on scientific studies.
Scientific skepticism is an issue. But, says Elvira Welzig, the thirst for knowledge and the willingness to learn are innate in us – without anyone ever having to say: “Now learn something.” It’s just that people lose this curiosity over time. Says the managing director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG), who has headed the research institution since October 2022: “Knowledge and education are treasures that enable us to make things happen.” Researchers are the best proof that acquiring knowledge is a long, lifelong process Process is: “You keep looking at your topic in a new way.”
Even if the word scientific skepticism is not without controversy, she prefers it to scientific indifference: “It is more difficult to move someone who is indifferent than to move a skeptical person.”
