The Columbus Crew stripped its guest, Los Angeles FC, of its title as Major League Soccer champion, beating them 2-1 in the final match in Ohio.
The goals for Columbus were scored by Colombian Cucho Hernandez (33 from a penalty kick), Ghanaian Yaw Yeboah (37), and Gabon’s Denis Bouanga (74) for Los Angeles.
It is the third title for the Columbus team after 2008 and 2020, and the first under the leadership of its French coach, Wilfried Nancy, 46 years old.
Nancy spent most of his coaching career in North America since 2005, and after he was an assistant to former French national team scorer Thierry Henry in Montreal, he took over the technical duties of the first team in 2021, before moving two years later to Columbus.
Nancy praised his team, saying, “They have developed a lot, players and people. When we started, I told them: The impossible is just an opinion. Just have fun and we will improve. This is what happened and it is incredible. We imposed our style during the match. I am very proud.”
On the other hand, former Italy and Juventus captain, veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini (39 years old), who may have played his last match with Los Angeles FC before his retirement, failed to retain the title.
