WASHINGTON — Charlie Lindgren stopped 31 shots to record his second shutout this season and help the Washington Capitals defeat the New York Rangers 4-0 on Saturday.
Sonny Milano, Anthony Mantha, Tom Wilson and Nicolas Aubé-Kubel scored the goals for the Capitals, who spoiled the return to Washington of the team’s former head coach, Peter Laviolette.
Igor Shesterkin finished the game with 24 saves for the Rangers, who were shut out for the first time this season, while losing two games in a row for the first time as well.
Laviolette spent three seasons at the helm of the Capitals, before leaving the team in April and joining the Rangers two months later.
Milano, left out Thursday, opened the scoring for the Capitals after just 43 seconds of play.
Mantha redirected Evgeny Kuznetsov’s pass past Shesterkin 1:43 into the game to make it 2-0.
Wilson, who has five goals in his last five games, tripled the Capitals’ lead with his ninth of the season shortly after.
Aubé-Kubel scored shortly before midway in the second period.
