The tragic news was shared by his son Patrick O’Nealthrough his Instagram account.
“My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team at his side supporting him and loving him as he would us. This is very difficult for my wife Summer and I, but I will share some feelings to give you an idea of what a great man he is.” Patrick wrote.
“My father Ryan O’Neal has always been my hero. I admired him and he was always larger than life… He is a Hollywood legend. Full stop,” added the young man.
The cause of the actor’s death is currently unknown, however, he had had several health problems, including a diagnosis of chronic leukemia in 2001 and prostate cancer in 2012.
