Ajax captain Bergwijn criticizes ‘special people’: ‘Then I will present it properly’

Steven Bergwijn was important for Ajax on Saturday with a striking penalty against Sparta Rotterdam (2-1 win). The Amsterdam team played without names on the back. With three dots instead, Ajax wants to draw attention to the online hatred that footballers receive day in, day out. “The worst thing is when they bring your children in,” Bergwijn says at the press conference afterwards.
“Of course my children have nothing to do with it at all,” says Bergwijn, who can be affected by such online messages.
“They are often… now I have to put it neatly… strange people with fake accounts. You can’t really do anything about that.”
Bergwijn is the captain of Ajax, but has been linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia for weeks. “I said weeks ago that I don’t have to leave,” Bergwijn responds. “I have my family here, my children. I am happy at this club.”
Mike Verweij asks whether Bergwijn will definitely stay with Ajax during the winter break. “In football everything is open. You never know what will happen. But I don’t have to leave.”
Bergwijn scored another penalty against Sparta. “Whether I’m a specialist? I don’t know. So far I’ve covered everything, so just tell me.”
Last season, Dusan Tadic took the penalties, but after the departure of the left winger, another taker had to be appointed. “We practiced during training. I shot them all, just like Brian (Brobbey, ed.). I was allowed to take the first against Heracles Almelo (in August, ed.) and I have been the taker ever since.”
