“Anatomy of Fall” Dominates European Film Academy Awards – Full List of Winners

At the European Film Academy awards ceremony, which took place on Saturday, December 9, in Berlin, almost all the main awards, including wins in the “European film” category, were won by French director Justine Triet’s film “Anatomy of Fall” ), while the Estonian director Anna Hints and her film “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” won in the documentary film category.

The winning film “Anatomy of Fall” has already received the main prize of the Cannes Film Festival this year – “Golden Palm Branch”. In Latvia, the film could be seen in the program of the Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF).

The film tells the story of a German writer whose husband is found dead under mysterious circumstances, but she is accused of murder. German actress Sandra Hüller plays the main role in the film. The film mostly takes place in the courtroom, where the accused and her visually impaired son are testifying. Inconsistencies in what is said complicate the situation, increasing the prosecutor’s aggression against the accused woman.

The author of the film, Žistine Triet, received the award in the “European director” category, as well as “Anatomy of the Fall”, which is a joint work of Triet and the director, screenwriter and actor Artur Harari, was awarded the best screenplay.

The leading actress Sandra Hüler was also awarded the European Film Academy award.

In the “European actor” category, the world-renowned Danish screen master Mads Mikkelsen was recognized as the best for his role in the Danish film “The Promised Land”.

In the “European animated film” category, the Spanish director Pablo Berger’s film “Robot Dreams” won. We would like to remind you that the film “A Greyhound of a Girl” was also nominated for the award in this category, one of the co-producing countries of which is Latvia.

This ceremony was especially important for our Estonian neighbors – the prize in the “European Documentary” category went to Estonian director Anna Hints for the film “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”. The director sang a speech of thanks, encouraging both the film crew and the rest of the audience to join.

Lithuanians also had a reason to celebrate the European Film Festival on Saturday evening. The special “Eurimages” International Co-Production Award went to Lithuanian producer Uljana Kima. Among her works produced in Ukraine are the films “Mariupole” (2016) by the director Mantas Kvedravić, who died during the Russian attack, and “Mariupole 2”, which was released after his death. The producer is also connected with Latvian cinema professionals – several of her produced and respected films in Europe were made in cooperation with Latvian producers.

Spanish director Isabel Coixet received the honorary award “European contribution to world cinema”, while British actress Vanessa Redgrave was honored for her lifetime contribution to cinematography. The European Film Academy also welcomed the world-famous Hungarian film director Béla Tarr, who was awarded the European Film Academy President and Board Award.

European cinema professionals who passed away this year were honored with a special moment of remembrance at the ceremony, including actress Regīna Razuma and cameraman Kalvis Zalcmanis from Latvia.
