NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured a western image of a screaming face in deep space.
The image, which was taken during the discovery by scientists at the University of Texas at Austin, of a galaxy that generates hundreds of stars annually, appeared in the form of a ghostly body with eyes and a large open mouth, according to the British Daily Mail website.
The astronomers identified the strange red dot in the telescope’s data and mapped the galaxy to having formed about 900 million years after the Big Bang, relying on James Webb Space Telescope images, which are data visualizations recreated by artists, not actual images of the objects depicted. This discovery could change scientists’ understanding of the early universe. They previously thought that massive stellar nurseries were rare, but it appears that they may be three to 10 times more common.
“This thing is a real beast,” said Jed McKinney, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin. “Even though it looks like a small bubble, it actually forms hundreds of new stars every year.”
