A preliminary investigation into the former commander of the Rusich military group, St. Petersburg resident Voislav Torden, was launched by the Central Criminal Police of Finland, Yle reports on December 9, citing Deputy Prosecutor General Jukka Rappe.
Torden is suspected of terrorist crimes in Ukraine, the publication explains. Previously, Torden was detained at the request of Ukraine; since August he has been kept in the Vantaa detention center; since yesterday he has been guarded by the Finnish border service.
The media call the case “unusual”, since Torden is on the EU sanctions list under his former name Jan Petrovsky, and he is prohibited from entering Finland, and the crime itself did not occur in Suomi. The day before, a Finnish court refused to extradite Torden-Petrovsky to Ukraine.
Vojislav Torden is also known as the nationalist Slavs from the sabotage and assault reconnaissance group “Rusich”. He was detained in July in Finland – the nationalist’s wife received a place at one of the Finnish universities of applied sciences, and he and his three children received a residence permit and were able to enter the country by car through the Vaalimaa – Torfyanovka checkpoint.
In August, Ukraine officially sent a request to Finland for his extradition. Kyiv considers Torden-Petrovsky a terrorist who participated in hostilities in Donbass in 2014–2015. Thorden changed his last name and first name after these events. His lawyer told Fontanka how Slavyan ended up in a Finnish prison.
