Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Infection Update: 6 Cases Detected in Indonesia – November 2023

Mycoplasma Pneumoniae infection which is currently attacking children in North China has also been detected in Indonesia.

Director General of Disease Prevention and Control Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said there were 6 confirmed cases of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae.

“Two days ago, after we confirmed, there are currently 6 cases of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae that have been affected and have been treated in hospital,” said Maxi at the Mycoplasma Pneumonia Update media meeting in Indonesia, Wednesday, November 6 2023.

Maxi detailed that 5 pneumonia patients had been treated at Medistra Hospital and 1 patient at JWCC Jakarta Hospital. Of the 5 patients being treated at Medistra Hospital, 2 of them were hospitalized on October 12 and October 25. Meanwhile, 3 other patients underwent outpatient treatment last November. Meanwhile, one patient at JWCC Hospital is said to be undergoing inpatient treatment.

All patients infected with Mycoplasma, said Maxi, were aged 3-12 years. The most common initial symptoms are fever and cough, mild shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing.

“Reports from the hospital, currently all patients have recovered,” he said.

Even though all the patients were declared healthy and had carried out their usual activities, continued Maxi, the government was still investigating cases, especially in school and home environments, considering that Mycoplasma Pneumonia bacteria spreads through droplets.

“From these 6 cases, we carried out an investigation. Even though the incident has passed, of course epidemiological investigations are still ongoing to gather information, especially in school and residential environments. “Because it is transmitted via droplets, it spreads more quickly,” said Maxi.
