Shane MacGowan’s Funeral: The Pogues frontman’s funeral in Dublin with celebrities and heartfelt tributes

The Irish frontman of The Pogues died on November 30 from meningitis and the rocker was buried last Friday. In the church in Dublin, the other band members paid tribute by playing their best-known hit ‘Fairytale of New York’. Some of MacGowan’s relatives then rose from their seats, hugged each other with big smiles and began to dance. Macgowan managed to let his loved ones party on that sad day.

Numerous actors and celebrities were also present at the funeral to pay their last respects to the Irish singer. Among those present were actor Johnny Depp (60) and Nick Cave (66). During the funeral, Johnny Depp paid tribute to his dear friend by reading a prayer of ‘peace, love and forgiveness’. Bob Geldof (72) and Paul David Hewson (62), better known as Bono, also read a prayer during the service.

Macgowan died at the age of 65, surrounded by his wife and sisters. The singer had been in trouble with his health for a long time. In 2015 he broke his pelvis and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He was then admitted to hospital last year after being diagnosed with encephalitis, a serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed. He also struggled with drug and alcohol problems for years. As a result, he suffered a mental breakdown at the age of seventeen and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.
