Ice dancing has changed a lot in the last two seasons. The departure from the sport of the leaders of the sport, who set certain trends, had a strong impact. The stages of the Grand Prix series this year were unexpected both in terms of points and overall impression. The final in Beijing is the first start where the world’s tops have gathered together.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier They won bronze, but for them it was a defeat, and a very painful one at that. The Canadians made a large number of mistakes and inaccuracies in rhythmic dance, which is why they took only third intermediate place. On the second day of the competition, everything went much better, the skaters were more collected and tried not to lose points on trifles. They controlled movement and balance. The Wuthering Heights free dance takes the viewer back to a time when Piper and Paul were true innovators in their dance form. They took a classic piece and very clearly stylized it as part of the competition program. This is still not the maximum that these athletes are capable of, but it is much better than what it was a few years ago. For the rental, Gilles/Poirier received 128.41 points and 213.58 in total. The Canadian dancers failed to defend the title of final champions.
Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri remained in second place. It is clear that they fully understood their place as leaders of European dance. The defeat in Japan did them good – in two weeks the Italians greatly polished their programs and reached almost the peak of their form. But their free dance, which includes many soundtracks and compositions, does not work. It seems absolutely passable, especially in comparison with the Montreal school. Even pure skating and emotionality can’t save you. This is boring to watch, although the production is not without interesting moments. Even so, the judges rate them well – 129.69 points for the rental and 215.51 in total.
Expected Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the Grand Prix final. During the stages of the series, the Americans lost to the Canadians in absentia. There were difficulties before the starts, mistakes in the box office. Their new free dance, “Time,” seems like a completely new take on competitive routines. After last year’s rather mediocre production, this one looks much fresher. A large amount of choreography, small movements that only work to create a holistic image and overall style of the program. With such a setup, there is no shame in winning major tournaments. In addition to good levels and high premiums, the dance captures and does not let go. Absolute balance is visible on the most complex lifts and transitions. The Americans were able to show a high-quality and unusual production without losing the loyalty of the judges, which is what so many are afraid of. Chock/Bates received an unreal 132.46 points for the rental and 221.61 in total.
Now the only skaters left in the top are not those with the brightest and most pronounced skates. Nobody takes it by skating and sliding anymore. New ice dancing is about the complexity of elements and choreography, experiments and brightness. Madison Chock and Evan Bates are perfect examples of this. The partner is criticized a lot for the lack of perfect gliding, but the coaches do not try to correct the shortcomings, but disguise them in such a way that the originality of the performance is brought to the fore.
