The city of Ostend and the Flemish Region – both equal owners – have known for a long time that the Thermae Palace needs to be renovated. This renovation itself will cost 94 million euros. But the total project is estimated at 134 million euros. “The Flemish government will make its contribution. For the rest, we finance with funds from the private sector, in particular the current operator of the hotel. The Ostend taxpayer will therefore not have to pay anything”, declared mayor Bart Tommelein (Open VLD ).
To make the investment profitable, a residential project is planned in the parking lot behind the building, even if the concrete plans for the residential project have not yet been developed.
“It will be an apartment complex where residents will be able to enjoy luxury hotel services such as wellness. The project must be profitable and it is not enough to restore this building, it must also be able to maintain it in the future,” said Björn Anseeuw.
Once the building permit has been obtained for the renovation and new construction, the project can begin. Within five to six years, the Thermae Palace complex should be ready.
