Tons of dead fish washed up off the coast of Hakodate, Japan. The fish is mostly sardines and mackerel.
Takashi Fujioka, a researcher at the Hakodate Fisheries Research Institute, believes the fish either died from lack of oxygen or entered cold waters during migration.
The dead fish covered the beach about a kilometer long.
😨 Thousands of tons of sardines and mackerel washed ashore near the Japanese city of Hakodate
According to local authorities, the strip of shore littered with fish is approximately 1.5 km. However, scientists cannot name the exact cause of what happened. According to one pic.twitter.com/kmZxYZC2Jf

Local residents said they had never seen anything like it. Authorities are advising people not to consume the fish. However, on the shore, residents of Hakodate collected it to sell.
The exact cause of the tons of dead fish is still unclear.
According to Fujioka, the fish may have become exhausted while being chased by larger fish.
He said the lack of oxygen while moving in a dense group could cause them to wash ashore, bTV reports.

The incident coincides with the southward migration of sardines.
At the same time, decomposing fish can lower oxygen levels in the water and affect the marine environment.
