A woman from Wisconsin in the US was shot in the buttocks after she brought a loaded firearm into an MRI machine during a doctor’s visit, documents from the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) show.
The 57-year-old had a handgun concealed on her when she was led into the MRI machine, but when the machine’s powerful magnets were activated, the trigger was released and the weapon fired.
“The patient suffered a gunshot wound in the right seat,” says the report that the woman’s insurance company sent to the FDA.

Admitted to the hospital
“The patient was examined by a doctor at the scene, who described the entrance and exit holes as very small and superficial, only penetrating the subcutaneous tissue,” the report continues
After being shot, the woman was admitted to hospital and treated for her wounds. She later fully recovered, the report states.

It is unclear how the woman could bring a weapon into the MRI room. She was routinely searched for metal objects and said she was not wearing any before going in, writes New York Post.
MRI machines use magnetic fields generated by extremely powerful magnets to create images of the inside of the human body.
The magnets are so powerful that patients must remove all metal from their bodies, and all objects entering the machine rooms are carefully monitored to prevent ordinary objects from becoming dangerous projectiles.
Was killed
Despite precautions, accidents caused by MRI machines have occurred in the past.
As recently as October, a nurse at a San Francisco hospital suffered crushing injuries after she was pinned between an MRI machine and a hospital bed that was violently pulled into the machine.
In January, a lawyer was killed in a hospital in Brazil after a handgun he was carrying in his waistband was ripped out of his pants and shot into his stomach.
