Juventus Turin took the provisional lead in the Italian championship by beating defending champion Napoli 1-0 at home in the opening match of matchday 15.
A headed goal from Federico Gatti (51st) gave victory to the Turin side, who are one point ahead of Inter Milan (2nd), who host Udinese (16th) on Saturday (8:45 p.m.).
At the end of a meeting that was both very committed and very closed defensively, Massimiliano Allegri’s men won their eleventh victory of the season.
The Turin club has only lost once in Serie A this season (4-2 at Sassuolo, 5th day), and is now riding an unbeaten streak of ten matches (eight wins, two draws) and thus puts the pressure on Inter.
However, during a lively encounter, the best opportunity of the match went to Naples, when the Georgian Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, alone in front of Wojciech Szczesny’s goal, shot over (28th). Kvaratskhelia was unmarked on the left following a marking error and an inspired pass from Victor Osimhen.
Naples, with its new coach Walter Mazzarri, who has just replaced the Frenchman Rudi Garcia, is fifth, twelve lengths behind its opponent of the day.
Masked striker Victor Osimhen, top scorer in Serie A last season, thought he would equalize in the 70th minute but his goal was disallowed for offside. The Nigerian managed to avoid goalkeeper Szczesny’s exit before finishing.
Napoli intended to redeem themselves from their last heavy defeat at home against Inter Milan (0-3), a lost effort.
