Remembering Ryan O’Neal: A Look Back at the Life and Career of the Beloved Actor

American actor Ryan O’Neal died on Friday at the age of 82. The news was confirmed by his son, Patrick O’Neal, with a post on Instagram, but the causes of death are not currently known.

Ryan O’Neal was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He is best remembered for playing the title role, Oliver Barrett IV, in the film Love Story in 1970, which was a huge success: it was the highest-grossing film that Paramount Pictures had produced up to that point and was nominated for seven Oscars. In 2002 the American Film Institute placed the film in ninth place in its ranking of the best romantic films of the twentieth century, ahead of City lights the Charlie Chaplin era The Life is Beautiful by Frank Capra.

O’Neal’s other major films all came in the 1970s, including But does dad send you alone? in 1972 and Paper Moon – Paper Moon in 1973. In 1975 he starred in Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon playing Redmond Barry Lyndon, a rather poor young man who however aims to get rich through a less than honest climb up the social ladder.

In his career O’Neal has been nominated for an Oscar and two Golden Globes, but the most important award he has won is a David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actor, thanks to Love Story.
