KORAN GALA – Symptoms of childhood pneumonia generally begin with fever, cough or runny nose followed by symptoms of shortness of breath. This was conveyed by a child health expert from the Children’s Health Medical Staff Group at Dr. Hospital. Cipto Mangunkusumo, dr. Wahyuni Indawati Sp. A., Subsp. Resp.
“Generally the symptoms of pneumonia begin with fever, cough or runny nose, then followed by symptoms of shortness of breath which usually occur within 14 days and are acute,” he said in Jakarta, Thursday 7 December 2023.
Wahyuni explained that symptoms of shortness of breath are characterized by heavy breathing efforts, such as pulling on the chest wall when breathing or the presence of nostril breathing. Shortness of breath is an indication that the child is lacking oxygen. If this happens to a child, then immediately take him to a health facility for further examination.

To recognize a child who is experiencing shortness of breath, parents can count the frequency of breathing in one minute by placing their hand on the child’s chest.
Shortness of breath is characterized by a rapid breathing frequency of more than 60 times per minute for ages less than 2 months, more than 50 times per minute for ages 2 months – 1 year, more than 40 times per minute for ages 1 year – 5 years and more from 30 times per minute for ages over 5 years.
Prevention and treatment
Wahyuni, who specializes in pediatric respirology and also practices at Pondok Indah Hospital, said pneumonia can be caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infections and the most common causes are viruses or bacteria.

Preventive steps that can be taken can be started by ensuring that the infection does not spread to the surrounding environment.
“For example, when we are unwell, it is best to wear a mask properly, and follow proper coughing and sneezing etiquette by covering your mouth with your upper sleeve or tissue and then throwing it in the trash,” he explained.
One way to prevent the spread of infection is to diligently wash your hands with running water and soap after every cough and sneeze, after touching surfaces, especially in public places, before eating, and so on. This applies not only to adults but also children.
