Six young people were convicted on Friday of involvement in the murder of French teacher Samuel Paty. The 47-year-old teacher was beheaded by an extremist in 2020 after showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in a lesson on freedom of expression.
The ex-students are given various punishments. The sentences range from six months at home with an electronic ankle bracelet to fourteen months’ probation, French media report.
One of the six students reportedly told her parents that Paty had asked Muslim students to leave the room before showing the caricatures. But according to the court, it has been proven that she was not in the classroom at all at that time. Therefore, the court convicted her of false accusations and defamatory comments.
She allegedly made up the story to keep the real reason for her suspension a secret from her parents. Due to her claims, her father called for action on social media.
A few days later – on October 16 – Paty was beheaded near his high school by an eighteen-year-old extremist. The perpetrator was shot dead by the police shortly after the murder.
The other youths were found guilty of participating in the ambush. They would have pointed out Paty to the perpetrator. They were between fourteen and fifteen years old at the time.
The trial took place behind closed doors at the juvenile court in Paris. A trial against eight adult suspects for their role in the murder will begin at the end of next year.
