In an accident on the L437 near Uelversheim on Thursday, a 61-year-old driver crashed head-on into a van and was seriously injured. This is reported by the Oppenheim police station.
At around 9:45 a.m., the 61-year-old drove on the L437 from Guntersblum towards Uelversheim. In the curve at the junction with the K40, the 61-year-old’s VW Passat swerved and went into the oncoming lane. The 49-year-old driver of a Mercedes Sprinter, who was driving towards her, was no longer able to avoid the collision despite emergency braking.
The vehicles crashed into each other head-on, the Sprinter ended up in a vineyard and the car came to a stop on the road. Both drivers were injured, the 61-year-old seriously, the 49-year-old only slightly. They were taken to nearby hospitals.
There was black ice and fog at the time of the accident. The police suspect that the 61-year-old did not adjust her speed accordingly while driving. Both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed away. Some vines in the vineyard were also damaged.
Between 10 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. the L437 between Uelversheim and the junction with the K40 was completely closed. The Mainz public prosecutor’s office has ordered an expert report to preserve evidence and clarify the circumstances of the accident.
