Many people may have been surprised when the disaster message from the last Gyeongju earthquake suddenly rang in the early morning hours.
There was a lot of debate on social media about the standards for sending disaster text messages, whether it was right to send them nationwide rather than just nearby regions.
Reporter Min-kyung Kim covered the process and standards for sending earthquake disaster messages.

Early morning when everyone is asleep
A text message accompanied by a loud alarm woke me up from my sweet sleep.
This is an emergency disaster message that a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do at 4:55.
However, the text message was sent not only to Gyeongju or Gyeongbuk, but also to Seoul, and complaints about waking up from sleep were spread online.
Earthquake emergency text messages are sent when an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater occurs.
As soon as an earthquake occurs, a text message is sent by automatically analyzing the values from 3 to 4 nearby observation stations.
Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater send disaster messages only to nearby areas.
For earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher, related text messages are sent nationwide.
In particular, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or higher are classified as emergency disasters, and a text message is sent with a 60dB notification sound.

Disaster text messages are first sent through automatic analysis, and then a detailed analysis of the earthquake is performed manually.
Here at the National Earthquake Situation Room, earthquake analysts carefully analyze the magnitude and location of the earthquake and send safety information letters if the magnitude is adjusted.
You can refuse to receive safety messages and emergency disaster texts, but you will receive emergency disaster texts regardless of whether you reject them or not.
When a large earthquake occurs, it is possible to evacuate a short distance, such as under a desk, in about 5 seconds in areas other than the epicenter, and evacuate outside the building if it takes more than 10 seconds.
Earthquakes are natural disasters that cannot be predicted and it is best to evacuate as quickly as possible.
There is a need to improve awareness of earthquake disaster texts that indicate the golden time for evacuation.
