Matthijs van Nieuwkerk said he was also in discussions with the public broadcaster about a return. “I was spoiled in interest, I can’t say anything else,” says the presenter RTL Boulevard.
On Friday, RTL confirmed after reporting it AD that Van Nieuwkerk has signed a four-year contract.
There had been speculation about Van Nieuwkerk’s plans for some time. Earlier this week it was whispered that he would be responsible for the eve of NPO1 on Friday. The presenter says that he was indeed asked to do so.
Yet he chose RTL. “What I ultimately wanted was to make programs that I am curious about, and that is possible,” says Van Nieuwkerk. “I actually also wanted a brand new horizon after the year behind me.”
Van Nieuwkerk said that he also sat down with RTL five years ago. “We were almost on the dance floor together,” he said. Ultimately, he decided to stay with BNNVARA.
Van Nieuwkerk opts for a current program full of music
From April 21, 2024, Van Nieuwkerk can be seen on Sunday evenings in a current program full of music on RTL 4. In addition, other newly developed programs for RTL and Videoland are being discussed.
Van Nieuwkerk left the NPO at the end of 2022 after reports about the working atmosphere at The world goes on. Partly in response to those revelations of de Volkskrant a committee led by Martin van Rijn started a major investigation into the work culture in Hilversum.
The results are expected at the end of January. The commercial channels, including RTL, are not part of this research.
