Driessen puts Ajax player in his place: ‘Super uncollegial to do this’

Mike Verweij and Valentijn Driessen have different opinions about Steven Berghuis. The Ajax midfielder asked for a VAR check on Wednesday after a hard foul by Yassin Oukili on Hlynsson. ‘Uncollegial’, says Driessen, while Verweij is staying in the Berghuis camp.
“Berghuis saw it very clearly, I thought,” says Verweij in De Telegraaf’s Kick-off for the midfielder and attacker of Ajax. “A referee like that also says: ‘Well, I’ll blow the whistle for the last six minutes.’ But Pol van Boekel should have simply given a red card for that foul on Hlynsson.”

“Now I don’t know whether you should stand there like: ‘Look at that VAR screen’. But the fact that it was not looked at… That would have been very sad for RKC. Then you are allowed another six minutes against Ajax playing football and then someone will be suspended for two matches. But I thought it was an offense that warrants a red card,” Verweij adds.
Oukili committed a serious foul on Hlynsson on Wednesday evening, but was given a yellow card. Berghuis immediately made a VAR gesture after Oukili’s foul. Last Thursday, the midfielder and winger was himself sent off in the away match against Olympique Marseille after VAR intervention.

“I wonder: asking for a card is yellow. And asking for this (check of the VAR, ed.), is that allowed?” Driessen agrees. “I also thought it was very uncollegial, I must say. And especially because you saw very quickly that that boy (Hlynsson, ed.) could continue playing. Very uncollegial to do this,” the journalist awarded Berghuis a failing grade.
“I actually think it was very collegial,” Verweij disagrees with his colleague. “Because Hlynsson is a young boy in the Ajax selection. He is really held in high regard by the older players. And they saw that he was given a scandalous kick. But you are not allowed to do it, because I think there is also a yellow sign here card for.”

Kees Kwakman was also shocked by Oukili’s foul on Hlynsson. “That was a nasty foul, not nice to see,” the analyst said afterwards to ESPN. “You immediately saw it in Berghuis’ reaction. He (Berghuis, ed.) saw it well in my eyes. I don’t think he should do that, make a gesture from the VAR, but this is really a dirty violation. “
