Bulgarians, Romanians and Croats have the highest percentage of Slavic genes in the Balkans – about 50-60 percent, while Greeks have the lowest percentage of Slavic genes – 4 to 20 percent, according to a DNA scientific study from Bulgaria, North Macedonia , Serbia, Romania, Albania and Greece, Tanyug reported.
According to a study of the genetic history of the Balkans through different eras, carried out jointly by scientists from Serbia, Spain and the USA, about 50-60 percent of the genes of Bulgarians, Romanians and Croats are of Slavic origin. In the direction of Greece, the percentage drops to 4 percent in the interior of the country and 20 percent on the islands.
By analyzing ancient DNA from more than 30 sites, the study reflects population genetic changes and migration in the Balkans over two millennia, the study says. DNA from 140 skeletons from the period from the 1st to the 10th century was used, as well as the DNA of the modern population of the respective countries. The purpose of the study is to show the continuity of genes from the modern inhabitants of the Balkan countries and the “old Balkan” population since the Bronze Age.
The study confirms that in the 6th and 7th centuries there was a mass migration of the Slavs, which left “deep genetic traces on the Balkan peoples”.
Serbian scientist Dusan Keckarević, part of the team that conducted the study, notes that the different languages, religion and culture suggest that demographic and cultural processes over two millennia have given rise to the many differences among the peoples of the Balkans, even though they are genetically very close.
Analysis of the modern genome shows that the greatest genetic proximity today exists between Serbs, Croats and Romanians. (BTA, Simona – Alex Mihaleva)
