Against the backdrop of understandable problems with sales of new cars in 2023, the range of cars with this body type is the widest. And although the list of existing models today does not include many of the former bestsellers, there is plenty to choose from. Let’s look at the most interesting options in our opinion, but first let us remind you why the hatch is better than other bodies.
The main features of the hatchback are the interior combined with the trunk and the trunk lid in the form of a door with glass. It differs from a similar liftback by its short stern – the overhang of the body behind the rear wheels of the hatchback is the shortest among all bodies. Another similar type, the station wagon, is also long and always has a vertical rather than sloping tailgate. Just like in all the bodies mentioned here, by folding the rear seat in one way or another, the trunk of the hatchback can be increased several times. So that one or two passengers can still sit in the back, the seat is most often folded in parts.
The characteristic advantages of the hatchback include the lowest price among all passenger bodies, compactness and the abundance of body parts in case of repair. As a rule, it is hatchbacks that have the widest range of power units to choose from – from economical small-displacement “granny cars” to powerful units of “hot” trim levels (usually three-door).
The “personal” disadvantage of hatches is that the trunk is small in its original state; other disadvantages are common to all cars that have a single passenger and luggage space: noise and smells from the trunk, long heating of the interior in winter and the same leisurely cooling in summer.
Volkswagen Golf

The most famous hatchback of all time, in its eighth generation, offers Ukrainian motorists a very important thing – a full-fledged four-cylinder 1.6 MPI engine (110 hp). There are fewer and fewer such full-displacement units these days, while many owners are wary of small-displacement turbo engines from the downsizing cohort. Of course, the engine line has something for fans of the latest technology and active drive, up to the 2.0 TSI with 245 hp. But diesel engines are not available for us on the “official” Golfs. Transmission options include classic automatic transmissions with fluid couplings and robotic DSGs, while manual transmissions are available only with the 1.4 TSI turbo engine. What not everyone will like is the minimum number of physical buttons and controls on the dashboard.
Citroen C4

Not quite an ordinary car, which the manufacturer itself calls a cross-hatchback: it has something from a crossover SUV, namely, ground clearance increased to 21 cm. The latter is only available in tandem with a Japanese hydromechanical 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition, there is a C4 package with a purely electric drive. One of the oldest European brands offers German quality at a relatively low price. The classic hatchback has several characteristic external features, for which you should take a closer look at it. But in our case, it is interesting for another circumstance: under its hood there are the same two turbo engines (1.2 gasoline and 1.5 diesel) as in the above-mentioned Citroen C4. That is, we have an interesting opportunity to choose not a car with different engines, but the same engine with different cars. By the way, Opel also retains a generous set of mechanical buttons on the dashboard, so you won’t have to access the menu on the touch screen as often as some competitors.
Hyundai i30

This is probably the most conservative car in our selection, but it is conservative in the good sense. There is one engine – a 1.5-liter gasoline unit (110 hp), but two transmissions – pure manual and automatic, both 6-speed. Note that the engine is new (by Hyundai standards), but contrary to fashion, it is not turbocharged. This “old school” coveted by many consumers is felt in the design, in the interior design, and, excuse me, again in the large number of buttons on the dashboard. However, with electronic filling, on the contrary, everything is very progressive – the i30 has a huge range of passive and active safety systems. This Hyundai is distinguished from many of its classmates by its chassis, which is tuned more for comfortable movement than for active driving.
Kia Ceed

One of the most spacious C-class hatchbacks inside. Car testing experts note that the designers tried to make the third-generation Kia Ceed enjoyable for active drivers, and in many respects this worked out. True, only one “official” engine is available in Ukraine – a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine with a power of 128 hp. In addition, it is combined only with a classic hydromechanical automatic transmission, so the pleasure in the Sid comes more from control rather than acceleration. Finally, the warranty for this “Korean” is amazing – 7 years.
In short
Whatever brand and model we are talking about, the hatchback version will be the golden mean for the C-Class client – both in terms of price, and in terms of functionality, and in terms of equipment. And the choice in the Ukrainian B- and C-segments among hatchbacks will be the widest.
