The currently ruling parties, which will soon have the opportunity to form a new government, announce the liberalization of the Sunday trading ban. This is a topic that is often discussed by Civic Coalition and the Third Way. The left may also support this initiative, although this is not certain. The Act on restricting trade on Sundays, public holidays and certain other days was ceremoniously signed by the President of the Republic of Poland on January 30, 2018, and the President’s position included in his speech during this ceremony remains valid – informs the Press Office of the KPRP.
However, what will happen if the government led by Donald Tusk decides to push through the law opening shops on Sundays? It is most likely that President Duda will immediately veto such a bill – writes “GW”. Taking it to the Constitutional Tribunal seems less realistic. The response from the president’s office shows that the Sunday trading ban is treated as part of the legislative legacy PiS. As we read, Duda will not allow any deviations from this position.
To override the president’s veto, a qualified majority of 3/5 of the votes, i.e. 276 votes, is required. The future opposition government will have 248 votes. Confederation that’s an additional 18 votes. This gives a maximum of 266 votes. Therefore, there is no chance of overcoming the president’s veto.
