Betheada and Starfield leave TGA 2023 drawless

From having incredible hype to a surprisingly lukewarm reception, Bethesda and their only new IP in decades Starfield walk away from The Game Awards without a single trophy.

Starfield is Bethesda’s first invention in 21 years. It is the first game the studio has released that is not part of either The Elder Scrolls or Fallout in over 25 years. It was built up as one of the biggest games ever but all the praise apparently hasn’t rubbed off on actual players.

During The Game Awards 2023, the game was only entered and fought for the title “Best role-playing game”. Here, however, Todd Howard and Bethesda were beaten by Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3, which took home the prize to thunderous applause.

However, this should not come as a huge surprise. Many were building hype for Starfield, saying how it would set the bar for gaming for the next ten years. Others were not more than moderately impressed with all the loading screens and empty areas the game turned out to consist of.

The people’s voices have thus shown that hype, game studios’ previously earned prestige and big words during demonstrations do not matter. Bethesda simply has to accept that it is no longer the absolute epitome of RPG the studio was once upon a time.
