Their birthdays are next to each other: forester Arvīds Klišan – on December 6, and his brother, a trumpeter To Jānis Klišanas – December 7. Arvīd Klišān will turn 90 next year, and Jānis Klišān will turn 80 this year. And as part of the jubilee benefit, we will meet the celebrant and his golden trumpet at Stariņi’s home in the village of Spāre, Talsa region, where both live with their spouse Daina. Both were visited by Ilga Auguste.
Jānis Klišāns, concertmaster of the LNSO trumpet group from 1969 to 2006, was born on December 7, 1943 in Priekuli, Dignāja village, studied in the trumpet class of Jāzeps Mediņš Music High School and Jelgava Music High School.
In 1969, he went on his first foreign tour with the LNSO to Bulgaria, where he played solo in Alexander Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy” under the direction of Leonid Wigner, and in 1974, together with the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Kirill Kondrashin and Vasily Sinaisky, he went on a month-long concert tour of Austria, Belgium , Czechoslovakia, Holland, Italy and Switzerland; a year later – also on a month-long concert tour around Japan. Has toured all over Europe with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra on concert tours; has played with many famous conductors in Latvia and the world. From 2007 to August 2009, he worked in the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra conducted by Imanta Rešņas.
During his career as a trumpeter, he staged concertos for trumpet and orchestra by Alexander Arutunjan, Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Leopold Mozart, Georg Pelečs, Eino Tamberg, as well as works by Petr Eben, Maija Einfelde, Romuald Kalson, Aivars Krūmins and other authors.
Do you still blow the trumpet today, can it still be found somewhere in this house? In the painting on the wall – your golden trumpet.
On the 40th anniversary, my children and Mrs. gave it as a present. I don’t remember, but there was a trumpet number written there. The author is Juris Bindemanis, he took this painting to exhibitions and Jemma Skulmei liked it very much.
This house has everything I have made – the floors are laid by my own hands, I myself am a carpenter, plumber, electrician – I do everything. I have both good hands. Here, all corners are mine – my hands. That’s why I said – I’d like to redo everything I’ve done and replay everything I’ve played, because now I know how it would be better. At the same time, we got involved in theater art, but now we retired because the text is no longer in our minds. My biggest misfortune was this – any text that was presented in the play was transformed by me, I spoke to myself. It was the same with the trumpet. I put it down, peace and God.
Arvīds Klišāns says that when he blows into the horn every day, checking his breathing and lung technique, these are breathing exercises for him.
The exercises can be done, and I also breathe, only without the trumpet, but he is 89, I am 80. All woodpeckers live very long. Arvid is healthy only because he blows his horn every day. He plays just as much. Yes, he has breath! Our life is breath!
I’ve been thinking lately, why are people so mean? Why such submission? Why can one person order that you will die, you will shoot, you will kill? I do not understand. It bothers me. I argue with God. I begged him, reprimanded him, and I cannot understand why he created this and said: “I give you free will”. I am confused. How to get rid of it? I do not know. I can’t understand how you can raise your hand against a woman. I do not understand. There is a language for that, there is a conversation, and your opposite will never be like you. He should be accepted as he is. I hope the world will change. I don’t want to talk about any nationality. When a person, leaving the place where he lives, going to the next place, adapts to the place he entered, instead of establishing his own, there will be peace in the world.
