60% of Romanians suffer from vitamin D deficiency. This is manifested by fatigue, loss of bone density, muscle pain and damage to the immune system.
Unfortunately, too little of the required intake can be met from food to keep us healthy.
“Vitamin D is a lipid hormone, a fat-soluble hormone that we often find in adipose tissue. Regarding the importance of vitamin D, there are many topics discussed in the scientific community and in the media world, the proven effects are that it is one of the players in calcium metabolism and since childhood it helps the development of the skeleton,” said Teodor Eugen Oprea, endocrinologist specialist.
Vitamin D can also play an important role in maintaining a strong immune system, being a fat-soluble nutrient and one of the 24 essential micronutrients for the proper functioning of the body.
Vitamin D is produced by the human body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Foods such as fatty fish, fish oils, eggs, fortified dairy products and some fortified cereals are also sources of vitamin D.
“Naturally, the vitamin D ratio comes from two sources, exposure to the sun and the food source, with the mention that the food source is very poor in vitamin D and it is very difficult to maintain our capital of vitamin d from food. As sources, the most famous are fish oils, cod oil, TAIE liver, in fact, everywhere in the world the solution for vitamin D is supplementation with pharmacological products, which contain different forms of vitamin D,” he said.
Specialists talk about nine signs that may indicate a vitamin D deficiency in the body: fatigue, sleep problems, bone pain, depression or anxiety, hair loss, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, frequent colds or pale skin.
