A student opened fire on a number of her classmates inside a school in eastern Russia, killing one of them and wounding five before committing suicide, according to authorities and local news agencies.
The Russian Investigative Committee stated that the shooting occurred at a school in the city of Bryansk on the border with Ukraine. The committee added that there were some students among the wounded.
The official Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported that one of the injured was in critical condition.
A video clip, published by RIA Novosti, showed children isolated inside a classroom behind a door closed with desks and an upside-down notebook, during the attack.
The investigation committee said that preliminary investigations found that the 14-year-old student brought an automatic rifle to school and used it to shoot her classmates inside the classroom. RIA Novosti reported that the authorities detained the girl’s father for questioning.
The Russian “Shot” news channel said on the Telegram application that investigators also wanted to question the girl’s father about how his daughter obtained the weapon.
Maria Lvova Belova, Russia’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, said on her Telegram channel that she is supervising the care of infected children.
The Russian Interior Ministry stated that it is examining the motive behind the shooting, which is one of several shooting incidents that have occurred in schools in Russia over the past years.

In May 2021, a man opened fire on students inside his former high school in the Russian city of Kazan, killing nine people, including seven children.
