President Yoon Seok-yeol said, “New opportunities for defense industry exports will be created through cooperation in the semiconductor field scheduled for next week’s visit to the Netherlands.”
President Yoon presided over a joint public-private-military defense industry export strategy meeting today at Hanwha Aerospace in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, and said, “For our defense industry to take a leap forward, it is important to secure a stable supply chain for semiconductors and other sub-managers (materials, parts, equipment).” During his visit, he said, “We plan to focus on discussing ways to strengthen the semiconductor alliance between the two countries.”
President Yoon said, “In particular, semiconductor cooperation with the Netherlands, which possesses the world’s best exposure technology such as extreme ultraviolet ray EUV, will greatly contribute to strengthening our defense industry capabilities.”
The President’s Office explained that President Yoon emphasized that the defense industry is a national strategic industry that supports our security and economy, and expressed the government’s will to actively support it to become a new growth engine for the future.
At the meeting, the government announced a ‘Sustainable Defense Export Promotion Strategy’ to become one of the world’s top four defense industry powers by 2027, and focused on fostering five major high-tech strategic industries, including space, AI, manned and unmanned complex systems, semiconductors, and robots. I said I would do it.
We also shared the export success stories of large corporations through independent investment in technology development and the success stories of small and medium-sized enterprises that were able to grow through government support.
Today’s meeting is the second held jointly by the public, private and military, and President Yoon held the first meeting last year at Korea Aerospace Industries in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do.
About 100 people attended the meeting, including government officials such as Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Bang Kyu Bang, and Director of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration Eom Dong-hwan, the Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Commander of the Marine Corps, and representatives of over 40 defense companies.
