Saving Bologna’s Leaning Tower: A 10-Year, €20 million Restoration Project

It will take the Italian city of Bologna at least ten years and 20 million euros to save a famous medieval tower in the city center. La Garisenda is subsiding and is therefore becoming increasingly crooked.

An area around the twelfth-century structure has now been cordoned off for fear that the tower will collapse.

Mayor Matteo Lepore previously decided that no more traffic would be allowed near the 48-meter-high tower. Moreover, it is no longer possible to climb the structure. La Garisenda is now also permanently monitored with cameras.

These various measures involve an amount of 4.3 euros. According to Lepore, almost five times that amount is needed to prevent the tower from collapsing.

The mayor sees similarities in the restoration of La Garisenda with the work on the Tower of Pisa. The rescue and restoration of that tower took almost twelve years. “We have no reason to believe that the work in Bologna can be done much faster,” says Lepore.

The tower was not exactly crooked. But between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries the ground subsided slightly. La Garisenda was also originally higher: about 60 meters.
