With just over two weeks until Christmas Eve, there is a gift the Consumer Council wants you not to put under the tree, namely gift cards. They fear that the gift may become worthless.
– We believe that there is no point in buying gift cards as a Christmas present, given the risk that the gift will suddenly become worthless, says Thomas Iversen, senior legal adviser at the Consumer Council, in a press release.
The organization explains that there is often a risk that the gift card loses value as a result of fees, in addition to the fact that the entire amount can disappear if the gift card has a short deadline.
– Our recommendation is to write a nice Christmas card and rather transfer money, possibly give cash, says Iversen.
In April this year, the Storting asked the government to consider strengthening consumers’ rights when buying and using gift cards. The government was also asked to consider introducing a ban on gift card issuers being able to deduct fees from the card after it has been sold.
