In addition to the extraordinarily high investments, a lack of income from distributions from the Swiss National Bank and declining payments from the intercantonal financial equalization also contribute to the negative result.
The Greens submitted a proposal to correct the cantonal tax reduction decided two years ago, or to increase the tax rate again by 8 percentage points. According to the parliamentary group spokeswoman, the reason is the canton’s current poor financial situation. The application had no chance.
There was no dispute in the Council about the 1.5 percent increase in wages for state employees provided for in the budget. An additional one percent is set for individual wage increases.
Hunting shooting range project rejected
The expenditure on a new shooting range for hunters came under criticism in the council debate. A rejection request from the SVP found a majority. The cost of 9.06 million francs was estimated to be too high.
With the rejection it is expected that the project will not just be revised again. The possibility should also be examined as to whether the Thurgau hunters could complete their shooting exercises in another canton.
Concerns were raised about a planned workshop in Amriswil. According to a request from the parliamentary audit and finance commission, the 24.9 million franc project should be postponed for a year. Parliament ultimately voted in favor of a proposal from the Greens to reduce the loan by 2 million francs.
Thurgau Tourism received support from the Grand Council. The canton wanted to reduce its contributions to the organization by 250,000 francs. This cut was halved through a proposal from the GLP. A motion from the Center/EPP faction for an increase in cantonal and municipal contributions to inpatient long-term care in homes also found a majority.
