President Jokowi Delivers National Statement at 2030 World Climate Action Summit

Jakarta

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) delivered a national statement at the 2030 World Climate Action Summit (WCAS), which is part of the UNFCCC COP 28 agenda. On that occasion, Jokowi conveyed Indonesia’s achievements regarding climate and the environment

During the event, Jokowi said that Indonesia has and will continue to work hard to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 or earlier while enjoying high economic growth, poverty and inequality continue to be reduced significantly, and jobs continue to be created. Jokowi also emphasized that despite all limitations, Indonesia continues to reduce carbon emissions.

Between 2020 – 2022, said Jokowi, Indonesia will succeed in reducing carbon emissions by 42 percent compared to Business as Usual planning in 2015, including through improving Forest & Other Land Use (FOLU) management and accelerating the energy transition towards New Renewable Energy.

Jokowi’s delivery of the National Statement also received praise. He received appreciation from other countries.

Jokowi also received appreciation in several forums regarding the achievement of reducing emissions, especially related to mangrove restoration and reducing deforestation. For the first time, the delivery of the UNFCCC COP National Statement was held in two separate rooms, with two audiences. Apart from that, various side events and bilateral meetings were attended by delegates at the same time.

Then, during the delivery of the National Statement in the Al Ghafat Plenary room, Expo City Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (PEA), last Friday (1/12), only the head of state could enter along with two companions. The Indonesian delegation was only attended by Jokowi accompanied by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pahala Mansury.

Regarding the information that said there were other delegates who walked out, this is not true at all. The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, explained that she and the deputy foreign minister were present on all of Jokowi’s agenda.

International recognition of RI is very positive. Likewise at the bilateral meeting, where the Secretary General of the UN and also the Prime Minister of Norway expressed their appreciation for RI’s progress in active initiatives and progress in climate action to reduce emissions, especially in mangrove restoration and a significant reduction in deforestation in several last year until now,” said Siti.

It was stated that each state delegation was led by the head of state or head of government, and was only accompanied by two ministers. Siti emphasized that the news that there were delegates and NGOs walking out was not at all true that there was a walk out or NGOs walking out.

“Entering the courtroom with the head of state is also subject to strict regulations in the UN security system,” he said.

Meanwhile Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pahala Mansury also expressed the same thing. He said that President Jokowi had actually received appreciation in several forums regarding the achievement of reducing emissions.
