Tiara Kelsea Allen has been accused of causing the death of her boyfriend’s baby after she admitted shaking him and “roughly” changing his diaper in upstate New York.
The 26-year-old woman, a resident of rural St. Lawrence County, was initially arrested on July 13 for reckless assault of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to court documents released yesterday by Law & Crime.
The baby, identified only as Conway, died the following month after suffering a bilateral subdural hematoma or hemorragia cerebral. His age was not specified.
A grand jury in the county bordering Canada filed an indictment against Allen on November 17 for involuntary manslaughter and assault.
Allen’s initial statement to police indicated that she “caused Conway’s injuries.” “I took Conway out of the bassinet and put him on my bed. I went to the bathroom and when I came back Conway was restless. “I tried to calm him down and nothing worked,” he told the police.
“I took my anger out on him and I shouldn’t have.. “I picked him up with both hands and shook him back and forth out of frustration and anger.” Then she said she started cleaning him and dressing him.
“When I changed his diaper he had pooped and it was going up his back. I roughly changed Conway’s diaper by grabbing his legs and forcefully pushing his legs up to change him.. “I felt frustrated and angry during this time,” the signed statement said.
Shortly after the baby lost movement in his limbs and Allen called 911 and told the operator he was bleeding from his nose, according to his statement.
“I believe I caused Conway’s injuries. “I should have walked away from the situation and come back to him later, but it’s hard when he’s restless.”
Allen pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. He is due in court next month for a hearing.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Domestic violence is constant in New York and surrounding areas, between relatives, roommates and partners, even with minor victims.
Last month in New Jersey, a mother was arrested after her 5-year-old son was stabbed in their home in Newark, the state’s most populous city.
In late October, a 23-year-old mother was arrested in the Bronx on attempted murder charges for allegedly making her child sick with medication she didn’t need, the NYPD said.
Also that month, a Hispanic grandmother was arrested after confessing that she had stabbed her 5-year-old granddaughter at a home in Paterson, NJ.
At the end of August, a Hispanic man stabbed his partner and two babies to death, and then himself, inside the apartment he had assigned as “super” in a building in the Upper West Side from Manhattan (NYC). Also that month, an adult woman and a 12-year-old girl were stabbed at their residence in Newark.
