For nearly 65% of households in Bulgaria, incomes remained unchanged in the third quarter of 2023, while at the same time, around 70% of people have difficulty covering their daily expenses, according to the results of a study by the National Statistical Institute.
For 64.5% of Bulgarian households, incomes remained unchanged in the third quarter compared to the previous 12 months, which represents a decrease of 13.5 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2023.
However, 31.7% of people indicated an increase in income, which represents an increase of 15.5 percentage points compared to the second quarter, when only 16.2% had an increase in income, BNR reported.
The share of those who indicated a decrease in income for the last 12 months decreased in the third quarter of 2023 to 3.8%, which is 2 percentage points less compared to the previous quarter.
In the third quarter of 2023, the share of people who have difficulty covering their daily expenses remains relatively high – 70.1%. 36.6% of individuals have certain difficulties, while 21.9% define covering daily expenses as difficult, and 11.6% – as very difficult.
NSI notes that in the third quarter, the share of persons who are coping very hard or with difficulty decreases, while those who experience certain difficulties in covering daily expenses increases.
22.7% of individuals can cover their daily expenses relatively easily, and 7.2% do not experience any difficulties, which is 0.5 percentage points less than in the second quarter.
The share of those who responded that they can cover unexpected expenses of up to BGN 500 with their own funds (urgent home or car repairs, replacement of a washing machine or refrigerator, sudden illness, etc.) is increasing, and in the third quarter this share reached 55.7 % compared to 50.4% three months earlier, the latest NSI survey also shows.
At the same time, the share of those who indicated that they were unable to meet an unexpected expense decreased, and in the third quarter this share reached 44.3% compared to 49.2% of this opinion in the second quarter.
