In a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktors Orbáns, has requested that discussions about Ukraine be removed from the agenda of the upcoming European Union (EU) summit next week.
“I respectfully invite you not to ask the European Council to decide on these issues in December, because the obvious lack of consensus will lead to failure,” Orban said in the letter.
This is the second such letter expressing skepticism about Brussels’ position on the Ukraine issue.
Last month, the European Commission (EC) called for the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
The EC has also proposed EUR 50 billion in financial support for Ukraine in the bloc’s revised multi-year budget.
With Orbán’s letter, doubts will increase that these two agenda items will be settled at the summit, which will be held in Brussels on December 14 and 15.
“Given the current level of technical and political preparations, such expectations are unfounded,” Orban said.
Recalling his previous letter urging “strategic discussions” on the EU’s approach to Ukraine, Orbán warned that EU leaders “will not be in a position to make important decisions unless there is a consensus on our future strategy for Ukraine.”
“In the name of unity”, the EU should remove Ukraine from the agenda of the summit, Orban said.
