Marc-André Ter Stegen will not play for FC Barcelona for the time being. The Catalans report on the club website that the German closing post is undergoing surgery to correct the complaints in his lower back. That is why the goalkeeper will not return to the selection this calendar year at least. According to Mundo Deportivo and Fabrizio Romano, the current number 3 of La Liga will not enter the transfer market to attract a temporary replacement.

It is not entirely known exactly how long Ter Stegen will be out of action. According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, the goalie is aiming for a return in March.

Barça itself does not make any statements about the duration of Ter Stegen’s absence. A further medical update will follow after the operation, the club communicated.

Mundo Deportivo also mentions an absence of ‘maximum three months’. According to the Spanish sports newspaper, Barcelona will not be looking for a (temporary) replacement in the winter transfer window in January.

This would mean that Iñaki Peña will also defend the Catalans’ goal in the near future. Last Sunday he kept a clean sheet against Atlético Madrid (1-0), while he also served as goalkeeper against Rayo Vallecano (1-1) and FC Porto (2-1 win).

The newspaper outlines that the Catalans still had two options to strengthen the goalkeeper position. The names of the experienced and transfer-free David de Gea and Sergio Asenjo were discussed.

However, Los Azulgrana decide to reward Peña by giving him full confidence. Ander Astralaga and Diego Kochen move up one spot in the pecking order in the absence of Ter Stegen and are therefore second and third goalkeeper respectively.
