When Christian Horner dropped the bombshell before the weekend in Abu Dhabi that Lewis Hamilton’s representatives had approached both Red Bull and Ferrari at the start of 2023 to see what their options were for 2024, the seven-time champion had to face the press. We’ll probably never find out how it really was, but since Horner was the first to spread the news, Lewis naturally found himself on the defensive. However, he categorically denied that he contacted Red Bull in any way.
Would Verstappen and Hamilton be the strongest driving line-up of all time? Maybe so, but we’ll probably never see it. Apparently, however, there was some interest in its creation. At least in the event that at least one of the pair Lewis Hamilton – Christian Horner is telling the truth. The Red Bull boss claims the seven-time champion has approached his team to see if a 2024 slot could theoretically open up for him.
Hamilton he flatly denied this and instead came up with his own version of events, according to which Horner contacted him first. “I never approached them. That’s what Christian wrote to me. I checked with every member of my team and no one was talking to them. But they tried to reach out to us,” he explained Hamilton journalists in Abu Dhabi.
The Mercedes pilot claims that Horner contacted him on his old number and found the message only a few months later. “I looked it up on my old phone with an old number I found at home. When I turned it on, of course, I got hundreds of messages. I realized I also had one from Christian asking for a meeting.” explains Hamilton own version of events.
“I answered him from my new phone. So I found that message quite late. It came to me again sometime at the beginning of the year, so I wrote back many months later.” Lewis added.
According to his version, the head of Red Bull did not specify what the topic of the proposed meeting should be. In Hamilton’s reply, however, he allegedly only found congratulations on another world champion title. “There are a lot of people who like to pronounce my name because they know it will cause a reaction. If you’re a bit lonely and don’t get a lot of attention, this is the perfect thing. Just mention my name,” he says with irony Hamilton.
“I told Toto about my answer, especially after the news started to spread. At the same time, I wanted my team to know about it, because people think and such things never produce anything positive.” Lewis said.
He, of course, confirmed that he would be more than happy to challenge Max Verstappen. The Dutchman himself expressed himself similarly. You can never admit that you don’t want a certain pilot as a teammate. As a racer, you have to pretend you can beat everyone and you don’t have enough power in your team to influence the decision on such an important issue. “I would be more than happy to take on Max in the same car. That would be awesome. But I don’t think he’d want me as a teammate,” he declared Hamilton.
