(CNN) – The Israeli army said that its forces are currently present in “the heart of the city of Khan Yunis” in the southern Gaza Strip, amid the escalation of the fighting.
The commander of the IDF’s Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, described Tuesday as “the most intense day since the beginning of the ground operation – in terms of the number of terrorists killed, the number of battles, and the use of firepower from the ground and air.”
Accounts from Khan Yunis and Deir al-Balah to the north indicate intense Israeli strikes, with many casualties being transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
Winkelman said: “Since the end of the operational pause, Israeli Air Force aircraft have carried out two rounds of strikes, including dozens of aircraft from all combat squadrons.”
Finkelman added: “Hundreds of munitions were used during raids on tunnels, operational openings, and anti-tank missile launch sites in order to support the movement of IDF infantry soldiers on the ground.”
The Israeli army also reported violent battles north in the Jabalia and Shujaiya regions.
