Dutch-Israeli hostage Ofir Engel was released from hospital on Tuesday. He was released by Hamas six days ago. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz shares a photo of eighteen-year-old Engel with his parents in the medical center in Tel Aviv.
The family tells the newspaper that it hopes all hostages will be released “today.” “So that they can also receive the warm care that we received.”
Engel was kidnapped by Hamas from the Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7 and subsequently held in the Gaza Strip with about 240 others.
In order to get him released more quickly, he was given Dutch nationality through an emergency procedure. The boy’s grandfather, 77-year-old Jucha Engel, has a Dutch mother. After the kidnapping, he contacted the Dutch embassy in Israel.
“This is a very good evening,” Engel’s grandfather said last Wednesday when his grandson was released as part of a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas.
As far as we know, eighteen-year-old Engel is the only Dutch person who was held as a hostage in the Gaza Strip.
