A question that needs to be resolved once and for all. Is there a hazelnut spread in Czech supermarkets that would at least compare to the famous Nutella? And if so, are there more? We tested!
Whether it’s summer or winter, Nutella is constantly disappearing from the shelves of domestic supermarkets. It has its iconic taste, but also its fame. And since it’s already December, a month in which people give a lot of gifts, Nutella is one of the products that often end up in shopping baskets. Especially if people want to donate hazelnut spreads.

That’s right, we’re talking about them in the plural. There are many of them. And we wondered how many of them deserve the same attention as the famous brand.

As we rated
We are curious consumers, not experts, lab workers or other professionals. Therefore, we explicitly state that the test is performed by laypersons. We express our feelings about each product in a few paragraphs.
We bought 14 hazelnut spreads. The selection criterion was one essential – the product had to be a hazelnut spread with cocoa without milk additives (not to be confused with a cocoa spread with hazelnuts). Each of them can be bought in one or more supermarket chains in the Czech Republic (Tesco, Albert, Kaufland, Billa and Lidl).
Spreads were purchased in plastic containers or jars. We especially compared their taste, composition, consistency, basic weight parameters and, of course, price. If the products had something unusual, we mentioned it in the description.
We evaluated hazelnut spreads on a scale from 0 to 10, where ten means that we recommend the spread with all ten. So, does anything beat Nutella?
Ferrero Nutella

Manufacturer: not listed on the label
Store: Tesco (and others)
Weight: 350 g
Price: CZK 99.90
Everyone’s favorite spread, which even competitors come across in the names of their own similar products and whose name metaphorically covers the entire range of hazelnut spreads. Yes, Nutella from the Italian Ferrero cannot be missing from our selection, and due to its iconic status, we will also use it as a benchmark in the test.
Since Christmas is coming, her dosa was dressed in a fancy winter sweater. Unfortunately, they forgot to give it any certificate on sustainable agriculture, fair trade, or even a certificate from the Rainforest Alliance monitoring responsible business, which is a shame.
However, we cannot resist the nostalgic feeling when we open a can with foil after a long time. The spread smells quite hazelnut, we don’t smell cocoa. But the taste surprises us; she’s somehow sugarier and more artificial than we remember her. And the appearance of us he doesn’t lieNutella changed its formula in 2017 – it contains more sugar (56.3 grams per 100 grams) and less cocoa (cocoa powder – 7.4 percent).
Nutella also did not follow the trend of production without palm oil, from which companies often distance themselves, it contains only 13 percent of hazelnuts and its price, although it is still below one hundred crowns, is for 50 grams less packaging than the standard, in our opinion too high. It maintains its status mainly thanks to its prestige.

Kitbis Hazelnut Spread
Source: Vojtěch Vanda / REFRESHER
Manufacturer: Natra Malle, Malle, Belgium
Shop: Albert
Weight: 400 g
Price: CZK 69.90
The second package tested has a standard weight, a certificate from the Rainforest Alliance organization and also a significantly more positive price. It does contain palm oil, but in addition to it, we also find rapeseed oil in the package. As in Nutella, there are 13 percent hazelnuts, seven percent cocoa powder, a similar amount of fat, and even less sugar (53 grams per 100 grams).
The Belgian spread smells less “aggressive” of sugar than the first product tested and has a more balanced taste. However, it is still a sweet and quite unhealthy spreadable spread, for which you will nevertheless pay much less.
