Tax return: This is how much money the Saxons received back

In comparison, the Saxons receive relatively little money back from the tax offices. The fastest tax offices are also outside Saxony.

According to their tax returns, the Saxons receive comparatively little money back from the tax offices. This emerges from the 2023 tax report from the service provider Wiso. Accordingly, Saxons were paid back an average of 1,182 euros after submitting their income tax return. This puts the Free State in second to last place in this ranking of federal states. Only Thuringians received even less, with an average of 1,163 euros. The basis for the figures is the tax returns submitted with the “Wiso Tax” program for 2021.

The federal state of Hesse, on the other hand, is the front runner: there were the highest refunds with an average of 1,809 euros, followed by Baden-Württemberg with 1,717 euros and Hamburg with 1,681 euros. A reason for the regional differences is not given. According to the information, 82.6 percent of taxpayers receive a refund from the tax office for their overpaid taxes.

Taxpayers nationwide waited around 43 days for their decision in 2022. In 2023, taxpayers have been waiting an average of 45 days for their tax assessments. The Herne and Solingen tax offices in North Rhine-Westphalia won the race for the title of fastest tax office in 2022. The tax offices only needed an average of 28 days to process all tax returns for the 2021 tax year. The Olpe tax office in North Rhine-Westphalia sent out the notices in a similarly quick manner, on average after just 29 days.

As the statistics also show, 36 percent of all employees were able to apply the home office allowance. Of these, 42 percent make full use of the flat rate. The home office was used on an average of 91 working days. 12.9 percent of all employees can even deduct a “real” study in their tax return.

A real exotic, on the other hand, is the office outside the home, which is not in one’s own apartment or house: only 1.5 percent of all work rooms are located beyond one’s own front door or apartment door.
