Chaos in Nasser Hospital: Gaza’s Worsening Healthcare Crisis

Jakarta

Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza experienced chaos after Israel carried out attacks again after the end of the previous week’s ceasefire. The hospital is one of a number of hospitals still operating in Khan Younis.

Doctors were forced to step over corpses on the floor and pools of blood to examine further patients. Doctors who treat patients are said to be exhausted.

Until now there is not a single hospital in the northern region that can treat patients. Seriously injured victims are being transferred daily to southern Gaza by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). However, in this area, only some hospitals are still functioning.

One of the residents, Abdelkarim Abu Warda, told how his daughter, Huda (9), had just arrived at Deir al-Balah Hospital by boarding one of the ICRC convoys. Huda suffered serious brain injuries.

“He had a brain hemorrhage, he was put on a ventilator. Since then he hasn’t responded to anything. He doesn’t answer me anymore,” he said sobbing while holding his child’s hand, quoted from France24, Monday (4/12/2023).

The UN and humanitarian groups there say that dozens of medical workers have died since the war began. Basic supplies and fuel are running low in hospitals and clinics.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said 15,500 people were confirmed to have died in Gaza since the conflict began. They added that 316 people had been killed since the end of the ceasefire.

Previously, Israel had ordered Palestinians to evacuate several areas in Khan Younis and asked them to go to marked shelters. However, residents said that these areas were actually attacked.
