You should clean your water bottle regularly anyway, because a lot of bacteria accumulate in it. However, the musty smell often lingers even after cleaning. You can’t get rid of it with just hot soapy water.
Remove musty odor
To really remove the musty smell, first wash your bottle with dishwashing liquid. There are special brushes that make cleaning your bottle easier. Then place it (if your bottle can handle it) in the freezer overnight. This way the bacteria are killed and you can be sure that your bottle is 100% bacteria-free.
Still smell?
Does your bottle still stink after you put it in the freezer (and ‘thawed’ it again)? Then it’s time for heavier artillery. Fill your water bottle with vinegar or a mix of water and baking soda. Let it soak overnight and then wash it off. The bad smell is now gone anyway.
